16 Jul 6 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR SHOES LAST FOREVER
My favorite shoes are platform, peep toe, five-inch heels by Miu Miu. They’re year-round shoes, worn bare in the spring and summer months, and with socks or tights when it gets colder. And get this: I bought them eight years ago.
They’re not even the oldest in my closet—I have a pair of shoes that dates back 10 years. (Though most have a lifespan of about five.) I’m not afraid to throw things out, but I have picked up a few tricks over the years, especially after taking care of the amazing quilted flats in the fashion closet while working at Chanel.
Here, six tips to make your shoes last forever.
1. STOCK UP ON MAGIC ERASERS.
These miraculous little scrubbers aren’t just for brightening your white walls. Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are a savior for stains on light-colored shoes. I have a terrific pair of nude Manolos that somehow got a pen mark on them (how does that happen?!) and Mr. Clean made the ink vanish instantly. The trick is, though, to use the eraser as soon as you see the stain. The longer you let it sit in, the harder it will be to get off. And for the sneakerheads out there, the eraser works wonders on white kicks.
2. PUT YOUR SHOES BACK IN THEIR BOXES. EVERY NIGHT.
If you care about your shoes—like really, really care—keep their respective boxes and place them inside after each wear. Think of your shoes’ boxes as their beds. Stuff the toes with the tissue they came with (that’s like their teddy bear). Do not allow them to touch each other—they need their space. What’s that, you say? You don’t have the time? You don’t have the space? Ignore your shoes, then—but don’t expect them to look nearly as nice as they could.
3. GET SOLED.
If you’re investing in a pair of shoes, you want them to last. Putting a non-slip sole on the shoe is a great way to make sure they do—and it’s much cheaper than replacing your pumps every year or two. Heels’R Us has simple transparent soles that you can easily cut-to-size & stick to your soles. And, the good thing is that they will serve as a non-slip sole at the same time!
4. STOCK UP ON MARKERS (OR GET A DYE JOB).
That old Sharpie trick—where you color in scuffed black patent leather pumps—actually works. So don’t stop with a black Sharpie. Furniture markers work like a charm, too. And if all else fails, find a leather shop and give them a dye job. You know how you feel bulletproof when you leave the salon with a fresh hue? Your shoes deserve that, too.
5. FIX PROBLEMS IMMEDIATELY.
Those beloved shoes I mentioned earlier? The heel tip was just gone…Well, luckily I always have some spare heel tips at home, in case I need them! Just check your heel tip size & order them, before it’s too late!
In case you don’t replace a worn out heel tip in time, your whole heel could be damaged, as in, irreplaceable damaged. And for only a few bucks, it’s better to be safe than sorry, right?
6. ALWAYS BRING YOUR FOLD-UP FLATS
Yes, sometimes, your heels just need a little rest. That could be when you need a rest, too, or when you have to conquer a surface that just isn’t for your heels, then, your fold-up’s might come in handy!
